NPD Department Spotlight

NPD Department Spotlight
Bartlett Regional Hospital
Juneau, Alaska
Submitted by
Gail Moorehead, MSN, RN-C, CPHQ ,
Director of Education Services

Bartlett Regional Hospital is a 60-bed community owned hospital in Juneau, Alaska. The hospital employs approximately 650 employees and about 190 of them are Registered Nurses. Our hospital services Juneau and outlying areas of Southeast Alaska Panhandle. This is a remote area with many of the communities only accessible by plane or boat.

The Staff Development department consists of three NPD practioners and one administrative assistant/Learning Management System (LMS) specialist and offers 50-100 activities annually. Our nursing staff provides care for patients in Obstetrics, Surgical Services, Critical Care, Medical/Surgical/Pediatric, Mental Health, Chemical Dependency, Emergency, Infusion Therapy, Radiology, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Oncology, and Outpatient Services.

Education content areas include new clinical research and specialty populations (neonates and Trauma for example), interdisciplinary teamwork and critical thinking, communication and technical skills. We offer courses to outlying areas when they are appropriate for outside marketing. The range for outreach is 65 miles.

Juneau is accessible by ferry and air only, restricting access to courses by the cost of transportation. Bartlett provides provider directed/provider paced, provider directed/learner paced (enduring) and blended courses to participants. We are also an American Heart Association Training Center for our area.
